Decision made. I'm quitting

March 5th, 2015 at 10:19 pm

Some of you were gracious enough to comment on my recent post about my job dilemma. Basically, I freelance and after taxes make nothing. I work in journalism, but it's becoming harder and harder every year to make a living doing that.

I've taken your advice, and done a lot of soul searching, and I'm quitting my freelance gig for the newspaper. The pay is terrible and hasn't gone up in six years, and I spend a fortune on childcare to free up the time to do the work. It's also become clear I will not be returning to full-time work in the field, due to lay offs and industry problems.

It's time for me to take some time and think of ways that I can more substantially and meaningfully support my family in both financial and emotional terms. Let the soul searching begin.

And thanks to all of you for your candid advice. I think the extra voices gave me the courage to look to something new.

there's always something freeing when you quit a job!
    What's next?
IPO for latest disposable airline cutlery?
Consulting on Llama hair quality for swimsuit imports?
    Second hand denture recycling?
The world is your oyster :P
    No seriously. . . . . . What are you looking forward to ?

    You guys are so funny.

It sounds cheesy, but I have nearly finished a YA novel, so I'm going to polish it up and send it out to be rejected. (Life long dream!).

I'm also going to write a nonfiction garden book and I have a couple of gigs teaching garden and preserving classes lined up. (In the distant past, I was the garden writer for the daily newspaper, and I have an urban 'homstead', so this is in my wheel house).

How exciting if you were to become a published author! That is my dream, too.

Well, CB, would it be cheating to say I already was in a way? I mean, 15 years in journalism for magazines, newspapers and wire services. I've written thousands of articles that have been read by a million people. I know i know, it's not the same. I'm hoping the jump to fiction will be less bumpy because of those years of writing experience. We'll see!

Have you considered writing short stories and self publishing on Amazon? I hear there is a big market, and it's fairly easy.

I may write some myself, if I can ever find the time...
