Quick rant!

February 25th, 2012 at 09:03 pm

Remember DH's "best" friend who magically showed up at our house 2 summers ago asking for $5,000 that he would magically pay us back within 90 days? As you know hubby insisted I give it to him-- a single guy in California.

Well, I'm steamed. OF course, he never paid him back and we've heard from him maybe once since he borrowed the money. Today, he emails me his online photo album of his month-long trip TO BRAZIL! You can't pay back your friends who have two kids to support, but you can go to Brazil??? I am so steamed. This is why I didn't want to give it to him in the first place. He couldn't pay his mortgage and property taxes because he'd rather spend his money on "fun" stuff. He's just like my sister. It makes me so mad. Sorry, I haven't done anything fun in years, stashing away every spare penny for me and my family's future, and you come along and take a huge chunk of it, disappear, and go to f**ing brazil. NEVER AGAIN>

Hopefully DH has learned the lesson as well as you have.

My former boyfriend is in the same boat. He let a friend on the verge of homelessness move in with him. Then the friend's father died without making arrangements for his funeral (although he did specify what he wanted done for his funeral). My old BF lent his friend over $5000 to pay for the funeral. Now two years later, the "friend" denies that they need to pay him back, meanwhile spending money to give gifts to children & grandchildren. My old BF is too much of a wimp to put his foot down and demand repayment OR to order this person out of his house, since he apparently now has enough money to live on his own.

Reminds me of that quote that George W. Bush famously blundered: "Fool me once, shame on you; food me twice, shame on me."

well, put that anger to use...if it was me i'd sit him down for a talk next time you see him and establish a repayment plan, say $x a week. Something is better than nothing.

I remember. Is your DH pissed also? If he is at least you'll have a hook next time he "insists". If he isn't, remind that he'd better be and that the Bank of ThriftoRama is officially... closed.

I haven;t told him yet, because I know he'll fight with me about it.

Oh I'd be pissed too! Grrrr.
And I would totally ask my DH to call his "friend" and ask for the money back ASAP given he can afford vacations and all.

Sorry, but if your guy can't see that this person is a complete loser, then he needs a reality check. There is no way that behavior like this should be tolerated, it should lead AT LEAST to a letter requesting a repayment plan. You should have at least some insurance that you will be repaid, and if not and you lose his "friendship" then it is no loss to begin with. Man, this kind of stuff makes me mad.

Let's face it. We're never getting the money back.
