Hazzah! Hubby got a bonus.

February 17th, 2012 at 08:11 pm

Hubby got his annual bonus today. Hazzah! It was $11,200 after taxes. It was funny, because we were in the kitchen together making coffee and breakfast with our 2 year old, and I was on the computer paying bills.

I told him the bonus arrived, he jumped up and down, and immediately began talking about how he wanted $1700 to build a super computer to replace his old one (He's a computer geek by trade, and it's been 10 years since I bought him a computer. But still!)

We both had a laugh because in the five minutes he spent telling me about the computer parts he wanted to buy, I had already "spent" the bonus. I had sent $1000 extra to the mortgage, paid all the normal monthly bills I pay on payday, and transferred the remaining $9,000 to the savings account. It happened in a snap. He was amazed. I said I always have a plan for every dollar.

Of course, now he doesn't think it's funny. He was kind of sad that I wouldn't give him $1700 right away for the computer. I'll cave eventually. I'd just like to revel in the feeling of being ahead and putting big chunks of money to work for us-- at least for a day or two.

LOL, I can relate to you. Whenever we get a big windfall, AS and NT get this wary look in their eyes because they assume it's all going to "boring" stuff like debt and savings. I try to dole out some for fun, since it does belong to all three of us, but luckily they are well trained not to expect it! Big Grin
Congrats, by the way! That is a crazy big bonus in our world; nearly 3x as much as any of us have ever received all at one time.

I know, huh? He said I'm always a humbug. But, I'm lucky. He doesn't ever ask for anything, and the computer would be work related. We talked about it. He knows that when I see money I see "ooo, I could use that to pay off the car, or the student loan, or..." you know. That's just how I think.

That's also one reason we work well together. He has simple tastes and only asks for expensive stuff every blue moon, and I make the money we do have work best for us. We usually figure out how to make everybody happy!

I say 10 percent is my tithe to fun. The only thing my DH ever wants is more trips to the UK and more Amazon gift cards.

    Woohoo!

My dh and I are both of the *Save it all* clothe. Makes it easy. Wink I think our spending decisions are pretty significantly independent of when we receive money. Which is probably a good thing. Which means, not like we never splurge, but it's just not the day we get a bonus. (It will be utilized to a good at some point - make life easier somewhere down the road).

Yeah. I only made $15,000 last year, so it's a big deal. That's why I don't want to spend it.

Fantastic! My partner and I are the same way, I always know EXACTLY where every dollar is going before I get it. She says if I won a million dollars I would have it allocated before we got the check. And she is right lol
