In the whirlwind, baby is growing up!

June 23rd, 2011 at 04:28 pm

We've been so focused on buying, fixing and selling houses since March that we hadn't realized how much our little man is growing up. He's fast approaching 3 and a half, and all of this dawned on me because he's actually too big for his toddler bed. Feet touching the end and always hitting his head.

So, in the midst of all the craziness, I added shopping for a twin mattress and frame to my to-do list. I think I have the frame taken care of. I love those little tikes race car beds, but of course, they are so expensive. I'm not paying $250 or more for one!

I ended up getting one anyone-- on craiglist, for $75 (cheaper than the new frames I was looking at). We pick it up on Sunday, so hopefully the seller won't flake out. I'm pretty confident buying it online because Little Tikes stuff is virtually indestructible.

Now, to find a mattress. I didn't realize mattress shopping was so complicated and expensive. Even a twin mattress with no box spring is pretty spendy. I guess we'll have to go hit the discount places and hope we can find something durable, comfy, and boy-sturdy.

Can any of you recommend a mattress for a boy? He'll probably be in it until at least 4th grade. Help!

Oh, and we are supposed to close on the house on the 30th. Some work got done yesterday. More will hopefully be finished before then. I'm sure there will be many money related posts after we sell and the check is in the bank.

    overstock.com

This is where we got a mattress for my 5yo last year.

The mattress prices were insane (overall), and I wanted something high quality. I'd prefer to buy one mattress that will last whole childhood. No doubt my idea of quality is not the same as others. I am not sure the mattress lives up to the 5-star reviews. BUT, still got a MUCH nicer mattress far cheaper by going online. Their shipping is like $1.99 or something - so double bonus. I was very pleased with the delivery, too. A+

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that. So even if it's a mattress, the shipping is still only $1.99? Did you go to a store and try out a similar mattress first?

    Here is one:

I believe the one we bought was more like $400+ new and $300-something on sale.

Yes - there was no additional shipping when I bought last year. I double checked and it was $2.95 - to be exact. Of course, check if that is still true!

I read a lot of online reviews. I was really wary to buy sight unseen, but in the end I would say it was well worth the cost. There are tons of reviews online.

Overstock is awesome, I love that site and the insurance of cheap shipping has lead me back time and time again. Still, the very best kids' mattress that we own was actually given to us, almost completely unused and still in its packaging... now THAT was a nice deal. Wink Good luck!

Well, the guy sold the car bed to someone else, even though we made arrangements for me to pick up. Argh. Tis the way of craigslist, I suppose. I have talked to yet another person who has a car bed, for Sunday pick up. Hopefully this one won't flake out!

Hope you got the car bed! A friend of mine has one for her son and he loves it!

I did manage to get one, at the 11th hour last night. We put it together tomorrow. I'm amped!!!
