New Orleans North

August 31st, 2008 at 03:05 am

Well, several adults, 3 cats and one dog are on their way to our house, evacuating Hurricane Gustav. We were expecting two more adults and a six-month-old baby, but they are hunkering down in Memphis instead.

I am sad for New Orleans, my former home, and sad for my friends who just finished all of their Katrina repairs. Here we go again.

Today I hugged the Bean and I told him how thankful I was that we were safe and happy and didn't have to evacuate and start all over again.

It was hard enough once. We didn't want to do it again. (FYI, I was driven out of Nola by Katrina and had to start life over again in Ohio, and spent 9 grueling months battling insurance companies and trying against all odds to sell our house.)

That said, I cleaned the house tonight, went to the farm market for some sweet corn today, and am about to go set up a queen size futon bed in the basement. Our basement is gigantic, all finished and the same size as the upstairs. This way, everyone will have their own bathroom and their own space and no one will have to listen to my Bean scream at night!

I pray it doesn't hit New Orleans again.

I am worried too, about friends living in Biloxi. Always worrying and praying. You are a good friend to share your home! Enjoy your time together and good luck to them!

It is so wonderful that you are able to help someone else this time.

My "guest room" is 2 beds in the basement and is like an ugly cave, but I'd take in friends, too!

I have an actual guest room upstairs, but we're sleep training the bean and I don't want anyone else to try to sleep through that!

Bless you for helping others out. I am too far away (in Canada) but we are all watching the news.

How horrible that you went through that, but how thankful you must be that you are now able to help others. That must have been so hard to deal with three years ago. My thoughts are with you having to live through this ordeal again, even from so far away.

My thoughts are with you now. At least you can provide your Louisiana family and friends with a safe place. I wouldn't worry about the bean and your guests - hurricane winds are much louder. Smile

Good news! Gustav hit landfall as a cat 2. I was just looking at a video of it and the storm seems rather cordial.

Of course, it could have easily been another Katrina. That or later storms as well. Who knows. It's nice to know that the state and federal government took it very seriously this time.

Also glad to hear that your lives are moving on, without having to worry about this anymore.

Well we have to hang on and wait, though. Three years ago, the storm was basically passed when the levees broke. Oh my God, that gives me shivers and tears.

OK, I'll quit coming back to comment again but I just checked the storm surge maps (I have family right on the coast who did not leave) and the storm surge is way smaller than the previous predictions were pointing toward. Thank goodness.
