Mixed coupon feelings.

July 26th, 2011 at 09:04 pm

I had a little bit of time to myself today thanks to grandma, so I decided to clip a few coupons and look for a few deals.

At the grocery store, I scored:
2 free Crest toothpaste
2 free Ivory body wash
4 free Oral B toothbrushes
2 free gallons of milk (had a special buy 4 cereals, get 2 free gallons of milk. Of course I had coupons for the cereal too.)
2 boxes of barilla pasta for 14 cents each.

I picked up a few other odds and ends for dinner tonight, and ended up saving 50 percent off the total bill thanks to the coupons.

I think I had less success at CVS. I tried to get the free gas card with the $30 purchase, but am now wondering if it was worth it.

I got 4 herbal essence/ aussie shampoos and hair sprays. on sale 2/ 4.97, but I used two coupons worth $4 off, so paid .97/2. Not bad!

I bought the Kotex UP tampons with a $1 off coupon, and got 2 ECb back, so paid 49 cents, plus a pack of free pens after 1.99 ECB.

For the gas deal, I also loaded up on a few more 2/$7 Arm and Hammer laundry detergents ( I had coupons for $1/2) and it's my favorite brand. No stinky perfumes.

I was $6.06 shy of the $30 before coupons to get the gas card, so I bought candy-- which we really don't need, but I had coupons and the gas card was dangling!

So, my thought is this is how they get you. Would I Have been better off just walking out with the shampoo and the ECB items? I feel like I'm spending to save. Not sure how I feel about that.

I guess if the gas card was worth at least $6.06, it was worth it, otherwise, just would've walked away with the other deals.

It was for $10, so I guess it's a wash. I bought lollipops, because we're using them for potty training rewards. Parents of the year!

We were at Walgreen's yesterday and I had to spend another 19 cents to use my expiring Register Reward. I ended up buying a greeting card for my nephew's birthday next month. But I'm with you--it feels idiotic sometimes.

My experience with Walgreen's was that, yes, I was spending more money to get good deals. If I bought items are regular prices at discount stores, such as Target, but didn't buy the extras required for a Walgreen's deal, I actually came out ahead. Just my experience.

Have you ever tried Equate, the Wal-Mart brand for women's hygiene supplies? I used to be a loyal Always woman, but when you check the prices, Wal-Mart wins, hands down. I also think most shampoos/conditioners are over-priced, and I'm perfectly happy with Suave, which smells so good and has a great price.

I have used Equate for some things, like body wash, and it was all fine. I'm not super picky about shampoo, but the conditioner has to be pretty good, or else I have to use twice as much in order to be able to get a comb through my hair.

Even if you donate the candy you came out ahead by 3.94, so I would say it's worth it. I often have to buy filler products to get deals or use my RRs up. I usually have a list of things that are fairly cheap at that store that I can use to fill in. Like sunflower seeds, which is a snack staple for me or Walgreens usually has some food item really cheap like jello, mushrooms or tomato sauce. I can fill in with one of those. They usually have cheap toilet paper, which is another good fillin item.

I might just cherry pick. But, I'm new at this, so I'm still figuring out what works for me. Thanks for the helpful tips and thoughts, guys!

I do have a $6 ECB, so I think I'm going to make a game of seeing how long I can make that last (i.e. spending it only on things that get me more ECBs, etc, without spending more money at CVS!)
