Yard Sale: to have or not to have one

May 13th, 2010 at 07:51 pm

I'm debating having a yard sale again this year. I have a lot of things I'd like to get rid of, and I could donate them, but it would be nice to have a little bit of money for them.

I had a yard sale last year and it tanked. Wasn't worth the time and the energy. But, I also didn't have it during the community yard sale weekend, so I missed out on all the free advertising and the critical mass of neighborhood sales.

I'm debating have a yard sale for one day this year, DURING the community yard sale, just to see if I can unload some things. I have a ton of baby stuff, a patio table and chairs, and a lot of odds and ends. I guess I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to price and put out everything. Everything that doesn't sell would be donated. I want every thing out of the house!

I say go for it! At least then you will know for the future if it matters when you have it.

Traffic can make a HUGE difference in sales. I would highly recommend trying during your community sales event. If your sale will include only your items, you can price things in groups: shirts $0.50, pants $1, ect.

Well, maybe I should try again. It's about 6 weeks off, so I guess it won't kill me to wait a few more weeks to take things to the Goodwill.

I say try again. I also think you should look into taking the baby items (clothes and such) to a resale shop. After the sub sale, you could take pics of what is left and list them on craigslist or e-bay.

Having it during the yard sale event will almost definitely lead to some reliable insurance that you will have lots of traffic, and hopefully far more sales. Give it a go, and then send the rest to Goodwill! That's what we did when we were getting ready to relocate overseas... and it worked out quite well. Good luck!

I don't think I will ever do baby resale again. I took two giant tubs of unworn, tags on clothes and a bunch of toys and equipment to Once Upon a Child and they gave me a whopping $3 for all of it. Total rip off. Not worth the time and the hassle the employees gave me.
