A decluttering philosophy for all of us

January 29th, 2009 at 03:35 am

I found this in a book and it really struck me:

"Look at everything you own and imagine who among your friends might be best served by each item. If you yourself are truly best served by the item, keep it. But if you can think of someone you know who could put it to better use, offer it to him or her."

I am going through drawers and closets right now, repeating this.

i always look at my stuff now and say to myself, 'what purpose does it serve?'. i have held back on buying many things, and have gotten rid of a lot of things too.

I am in the process of decluttering too. My "ebay table" is overflowing with items to sell. When I look around the house, I always think "when was the last time I used that or what purpose does it serve?" Once I clear the table, it will be full again!

That's similar to the philosophy I've had about decluttering for the past few years. After I became an avid thrift shopper (again) I was so pleased with my finds that I realized other people could have "happy finds" in the stuff around the house I wasn't using or didn't like. When the thrift store comes to pick up our cast offs, I imagine somebody finding these things on the shelf at a thrift store and getting excited about their great find of the day.
